Bon-Gak (Central Sangha University) It is interesting that Lancaster cites as evidence the various cases of transmissions in the Korean Son Buddhism for the multiplicity of the transmissions in the early years of Son school with regard to the Nine Mountain Son School that formed during Silla and Koryo dynasties. It is common, nowadays, to speak in terms of singular transmission (i.e., the transmission to one individual in a generation) when discussing about teacher-to-disciple transmission of the dharma teaching of Son School. However, Lancaster points out that various cases of multiple transmissions during Silla dynasty indicate that this view came only after Ho-tse Shen-hui. Moreover, Lancaster argues that the rejection of scholastic studies of texts in Son Buddhism and the harmonization of text and meditation are not fundamental issues in themselves, but rather related to the placement of emphasis, whether it be the translation of Buddhist texts or scholastic studies, at the time. This argument, it is important to note, runs counter to the Korean Son School which embraces the Son practice of achieving the revelation of the truth in one moment of thought while rejecting scholastic studies. Korean Son Buddhism's rejection of texts has its origin in the Lanksavatra Sutra's "Don't ask in words and don't answer in words" (ÝÕàâìéí® ÝÕÓÍ ìéí®), but this idea needs to be re-evaluated in light of the teaching that "although the true ch'an is above words, questioning and answering, as a means of passing down the doctrine, should not be taken lightly." Lastly, when the Korean Buddhism was on the brink of collapse during Choson dynasty, Son Buddhism provided a spiritual guidance for the Korean Buddhists, and during the period when there was a movement for the eradication of Buddhism in China, only Son Buddhism survived. If this was the case, it is important now, in the absence of persecution, for Son Buddhism to redefine itself in order for Buddhism to flourish as a religious philosophy for the twenty-first century. Various Buddhist philosophies since Sakyamuni must be reviewed to find the central principle that can offer specific ways by which our value system and pursuit of happiness can be guided. Any ideology that is isolated and closed, without foundation and practicality, faces the danger of decline in the modern society. It is imperative to find specific principles and means by which the role of Korean Buddhism, which champions Son, can be defined for the future.
